There is so much we could say about these details of how
Somethin Special came to be and the sentiments behind it ,

but the quick truth of it is, we do this mostly to connect and share memorable moments with our friends.

Over the years, we have thrown over 300 events, showcasing tons of different creative mediums, at dozens of venues, and have tried so many different ideas to bring our friends + folks that enjoy our taste together. We were never consistent partiers or had any intention of growing the events to book big artists. Truthfully, when we first started, we just thought it would be a small hangout at our house, but momentum took over and asked us to do more. The entire time we have just been folks trying to experience some sweet moments and provide some beauty to others.

Over the years of trying one idea after another, we became friends with a bunch of talented people of various backgrounds, mediums, and flavors. It is wonderful to have the relationships we do with these inspiring folks and it is something that I cherish. Gradually, we started to evolve our events for us all to come together, showcase these talents, do a good job for the venues that welcomed and supported our ideas, and always hope to provide a quality social and art experience for whoever show up. You hopefully, of course. <3

Fortunately, so many folks have showed up over the years. It is humbling. Eventbrite has us listed as having nearly 6,000 guests attend our events, but that does not account for people who showed up and paid cash, other payment platforms, were +1s or given free tickets, when we used other ticket platforms, and more. Most venues we have worked with were not typical venues for these ideas too, which deepens the neatness. As much as we do not do this for the numbers and focus on the experience and being authentic, that is pretty cool!

In general, everything we do is grassroots and based on the people we know and enjoy. All of the music artists and visual artists on this event are people we respect the work of and think they are talented enough to do this full time (or they already do this full time), we think are decent folks who contribute to their communities, and we are excited to experience spending time with them, alongside their music and art. Most of these artists and creatives are folks we have had the pleasure of having many personal conversations with, spent time with as friends, and are gems of humans.

Nicolette and I (2dreamagain), started DJing just to perform at our parties and share the music we wanted to hear. We never were trying to pursue being DJs outside of our events, it just happened. Pretty quickly after I started, I was being flown out yearly or more to different parts of the country to share music in super interesting situations. Some of those include in a historic lodge at Yellowstone National Park, in the middle of the Sonoran Desert (near Mexico), in various cabins and off grid houses, and in so many neat, intimate settings. We have now played on some music festivals in different parts of the country and I would say that we are getting pretty good at it (finally), with a whole lot of room to continue to improve.

Nicolette and I have both taken a break from putting together as many events as we used to. 300+ over 5 years is an absurd amount of days and nights spent producing events, and the work behind the scenes was always significantly more. I needed a break and to focus on my health for awhile, and still do. Nicolette wanted to travel a bunch. So nowadays we will not be putting on the frequency of events we used to, but it has provided opportunity to both only take on the best opportunities we are privileged to receive and as a result, we are able to provide you the best experience we are capable of. This has also allowed us to pursue some skillsets to increase our quality of life as well as pursue creative projects we have wanted to for years. We are hoping that because we are doing less, when we do put together events with longer times between each event in any area, that we get to see most of our friends at once instead of spread throughout a bunch of events like we used to. It also means that we can improve ourselves both creatively and personally quietly and without so much stress or other influences involved.

I genuinely believe this new change of pace will allow us to provide y’all somethin’ real special each time we poke our heads out, which this event is surely a reflection of. It takes all of the experience and wisdom gained from over the years and is a refined experience that I can calmly say will be fun, deeply satisfying, and worthy of your time and money. I need to feel good about those last parts to work on these ideas. Whenever I am not sure if the experience is going to be good enough to ask you for your time or resources, it eats at me, and bothers me greatly. I would like to be direct and honest with y’all. I was burning out last year doing events and, although the feedback was positive, I did not feel like I was capable of providing events at the potency of magic that I cared deeply about. So to be able to come back and put together this tasty gumbo of an experience means a lot to me. The venue is easily my favorite one to curate experiences at. They have treated me kindly, patiently, and with genuine care over a few years now. Anytime they allow me to put together an event there it is humbling and I am honored they allow me to. I care greatly about bringing beautiful ideas and beautiful moments to their space. It is also a joy to see their children grow up too. They are both going to be such sweet, intelligent people who bring joy to others, reflective of their parents and family.

I could honestly rant and extend this message 100x longer than it already is about all the beautiful and personal aspects to this event, what it means to me, my hopes that it can lead to more moments together, and be something you can take with you as you journey and reflect back on throughout your lives when you need moments of why.

In my opinion,

moments with people you enjoy
where it seems as if time has faded away,
the music is floating smoothly from one sound to the next,
the environment feels like it wants you there,
and the air feels like it is electric, empowering conversation that flows effortlessly,

Is one of the most special and satisfying parts of being a human.

This event is designed meticulously, with our best attempt at making those bits of magic happen.

All we need is for you to be there,
and to bring your own flavor of vibrancy.

Dress up,
be involved,
bring people you think are awesome,
tell people you love their outfits (if you do),
let go and dance a bit,
inspire others to do the same.

Whether we want to embrace it or not,
we are all in this together for this temporary time we have on this beautiful planet.

And on September 7th, 2024,
at the Matthews House in downtown Cary (just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina),
we have the opportunity to celebrate that, to celebrate being together, and to celebrate an attempt at beauty.

I truly mean this, which is why I try to say it every time I poke my head out:

Be good to yourself.
